Transform faults are called conservative boundaries because no crust is created or destroyed the plates just move past each other. Southwest Iceland experiences earthquakes because it's located right on top of a conservative-or transform-plate boundary, where two tectonic plate move past each other side by side. Transform faults occur at plate boundaries.
